The planned collision of a spacecraft with the Tempel 1 Comet provided a stark contract for the events of the week ending July 8, 2005. Science took a huge step forward in attempting to understand to makings of the universe around us. Closer to home, however, the problems of terrorist attacks continue to haunt the world, with fanatics using murder and mayhem in what they would view the service of their god.
